Garden Club Hosts Talk by Wildlife Rehabilitator

Camden Garden Club will host a program presented by Karen McElmurry of the Center for Wildlife in York on Thursday, September 22, at the Congregational Church on Elm Street in Camden. The club business meeting will begin at 9 a.m.; refreshments will be served and the program will begin at 10 a.m.The Center for Wildlife is a nonprofit organization with a mission to rehabilitate and provide sanctuary for sick and injured wild animals. McElmurry, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with 25 years of experience, will speak about her work at the Center and bring some of her rescued birds.All are welcome to attend the presentation

64th Camden House & Garden Tour

Sixty-four is a lot of years, and the annual appearance of the yellow tulip signs and the converging crowds on the third Thursday in July is old-hat around Camden and Rockport. But the Camden Garden Club’s House and Garden Tour manages to be fresh and exciting every year, thanks to the generosity and goodwill of so many area homeowners and gardeners.
While the Tour is a big event and therefore easy to notice, sometimes local citizens may not notice the results of the Tour, things they see every day, year after year. For example, people like the hanging baskets of red geraniums on the Camden lampposts and would certainly miss them if they weren’t there. They like the flowers in the traffic islands, and in the bridge boxes, at the Arch, and at the Chamber of Commerce. They would know if they thought about it that all those baskets, boxes, and beds require frequent watering and fertilizing (3 times a week). People like the well-groomed shrubbery beds curving around the Village Green. They like the lighted holiday wreaths on the lampposts in December. They like the new children’s amphitheater at Laite Beach and the new trees and shrubs along the front of the Middle School. They may even know about the dozen or so new trees planted on Camden residential streets, year after year. But many people seem to think those lovely additions to the quality of life here happen by themselves. “Isn’t that paid for by our taxes?” we hear fairly often. No. Except for a part of the cost of the street trees, all of that is paid for by the Annual House and Garden Tour.
It’s a big garden club, somewhere around 150 members, but the Tour is a huge project and every year we recruit friends and relatives to help us greet the public in the rooms and gardens and to direct parking. All have been gracious and reliable; we couldn’t pull this off without them. Every year the area business community responds to our letters with contributions to the Tour’s expenses. The area newspapers have accepted our building-the-excitement news releases with a cooperative spirit. We are grateful for the help of all of these and for their acknowledgement that the Tour exists entirely to benefit this community. They know we’re all in this together.
This year Marcy, Megan, and Peter van der Kieft and Ellie Appleton of Margo Moore Interiors in Camden invited tour goers to an afternoon garden party, with tea sandwiches, cookies, and beverages to cap the day, a lovely idea, much appreciated by the weary but happy tour goers and tour staff who gathered to share their stories of the day.
So many people worked many months – long, long hours – to accomplish the beautiful 64th tour. I cannot name them all in this space but must tell the world here of the remarkable dedication of this year’s Tour Chairman, Ann Reis-Cole. Thank you, Ann, and thanks to Ann’s family, who have aided, abetted and lived through this immense project, and last year’s, as well. Other committee chairs were splendid, too: Camy Vitullo, staffing; Sally Smyth, publicity; Fran Moore, signage and business contributions appeal; Pat Nelson, traffic; Molly Foster, flower arrangements; Meredith Scheck, set-up; and Signe Mather, Ann’s shadow this year and next year’s chairman.
The day was hot, in the 90s, but as was often mentioned, it didn’t rain. The crowd was large and happy. We won’t know for a few more days if we made our budget numbers, but it was a grand Tour. All of Camden and Rockport showed our visitors from all over New England what a lovely piece of the world this is and what gracious people live here. Thank you to all who said yes and made it possible.

Over 200 volunteers prepare for Thursday’s House & Garden Tour

Putting up banners around town is just one of the 200-plus jobs filled by the Camden Garden Club’s 140 members and their friends, neighbors, kids, husbands and significant others in order to put on the Club’s 64th annual House and Garden Tour. On the day of the tour, the full complement of 200 will be staffing the tour itself-some as greeters in the houses and gardens, some as parking or traffic assistants outside, some as ticket takers and sellers.

Rain or shine, the tour goes on, the result of a huge cooperative effort among many unsung heroes. For instance–Retailers cooperate by providing space for the Tour’s Posters, over 100 of which have been delivered to them by volunteers in Camden, Belfast, Rockland and beyond. Neighbors to the eight houses and gardens on the tour cooperate with the inevitable traffic created by the likely 800 to 1000 visitors to this event, and allow signs to be put up on their lawns. Some B&Bs have purchased advance tickets from local sellers for customers who want to be first in line at whichever house or garden they choose to start the tour-and save $5.00 on the $30 day-of-tour price.

Members have hosted innumerable committee meetings at their homes over the year preceding the tour, in order to design the tour, the tickets, the banners, the floral arrangements, the wooden signs, the press releases. They have taken ‘road trips’ to verify traffic patterns to the homes and inside them; contacted police and public officials for permits-scheduled the production of each item used in the tour-and, to tell the truth, had rather a bit of fun in doing it.

Contributors have kick-started the tour’s funding with donations. All ticket income is used to pay for many of the things that made Camden look so upbeat all year-the seasonal flower baskets or wreaths on Camden’s lamp-posts, the gardens at the Public Landing, the Village Green and in traffic medians, plus Union Street’s downtown bridge and archway flower boxes and many special projects.

Last but not least, the very special persons who open their homes and gardens for the tour will have a contribution made in their names to the non-profit of their choice, although matching their generosity to the Camden Garden Club is about impossible-they make this annual event possible for all the people who enjoy it, many of them repeaters who come back every year.

The special garden party for ticket-holders to Camden’s House & Garden Tour on July 21st will display Margo Moore’s container gardens-and her photos of their progress into miniature wildlife sanctuaries for a front stoop or deck. Some flowers are unique, more surprise us by massing into towers of ivy, walls of iris, vibrant banks of aroma and color from peonies and other favorites. Every size of home can host a container garden-Margo Moore can show us how.
This grand finale to Camden Garden Club’s 64th annual House and Garden Tour includes a wine tasting of Cellardoor Winery’s products, light refreshments, and displays by local artisans-all included in the $25 ticket. MARK YOUR CALENDARS – next week we start preparing our doors for a grand presentation for The Camden House and Garden Tour. We will be hosting an Afternoon Tea the day of the tour July 21st!

Our outdoor containers are bursting with colors and the presentation is spectacular. This year we have developed a map that will feature our containers and all the plants. To ticket holders the map is free – for non-ticket holders we ask for a small donation, the day of, to The Camden Garden Club to help in supporting their numerous programs throughout the year.

When is a weed not a weed? Do you have Ajuga running wild through your lawn? Find out what one homeowner decided to do. A local landscape designer best known for his stonework at the Children’s Amphitheatre at Laite Beach, has corralled this problem plant . He has adopted thrown away trees and shrubs and woven them into his newest landscape design. He has lots of ideas and knowledge. Visit his home and garden on the Camden Garden Club House and Garden Tour July 21 from 9:30 to 4:00pm. He will be available on site most of the day and loves to share his ideas and hear yours. Visit eight unique homes and gardens, enjoy a church luncheon and wind up the day at a Garden Tea Party at Margo Moore Interiors. Tickets are on sale locally in select shops and garden centers.
